The fourth annual Character Banquet took place on April 11, 2025, at the Cumberland Mountain State Park Recreation Lodge in Crossville, Tennessee. The event was hosted by the Crossville-Cumberland County Sports and Events Council and made possible through the generous support of several local sponsors, including First National Bank of Tennessee, First Bank, The Sports Council, Camp Nakanawa, Cumberland Vital Care, Peterson Wealth Advisory, Shelter Insurance / Wright Agency LLC, Eye Centers of Tennessee, Covenant Medical Group / Cumberland Orthopedics, Cumberland Components, Wyeth & Ed Burgess, and Scott Hartema.
Thanks to their contributions, 39 honorees along with over 300 parents, families, guests, local officials, coaches, and administrators were able to attend the banquet by invitation and free of charge. Ann and Pepe Perron sponsored the event’s guest speaker. Each sponsor was recognized during the banquet for their valued support.
This event is dedicated to honoring student-athletes from both high schools who have been nominated by their coaches for exemplifying outstanding leadership, values, and character.
Guided by the theme “Values Matter – Character Counts,” the event highlights the importance of character in athletics and serves as the foundation for selecting our honorees.

The keynote speaker for this year’s Character Banquet was Will Overstreet, former right defensive end for the University of Tennessee and a proud member of the 1998 National Championship team. After being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, Overstreet played three seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2004 due to injuries.
Following his football career, Overstreet launched a successful journey in finance, sales, and broadcasting. As both a former college and professional athlete, he deeply understands the importance of being part of a team—and the values it instills: discipline, resiliency, patience, and hard work.
Today, as a successful businessman and father of three, Overstreet continues to apply these lessons in his everyday life. His keynote address was filled with powerful, character-based stories that resonated with student athletes.
One particularly moving story came from a hike with his sons in the Great Smoky Mountains, where a falling limb struck him in the head, causing significant facial injuries. Drawing on his mental toughness and discipline, he persevered—walking back to the trailhead for help. He received immediate medical attention and made a full recovery.
Overstreet reminded the audience that, “Leadership without character is self-serving. Character is your foundation to succeed with the talent and work ethic you have.” He also credited his father for instilling in him the value of hard work—something he carries with him to this day.
The Character Banquet was honored to feature Danielle Rosser as our musical entertainment. A classically trained violinist, Danielle has been playing since the age of eight and brings both passion and precision to every performance.
She is a 2024 graduate of Tennessee Tech University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Psychology. Danielle is currently employed with the State of Tennessee and continues to share her musical talent with the community.
Her performance added a beautiful and inspiring touch to the evening’s celebration.
First National Bank of Tennessee, First Bank, Camp Nakanawa and The Sports Council are proud to be associated with this wonderful event. A special thank you to the event photographer, Dale Darling.
